Nittany Lions go 2-1 on final day at Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 9, 2011) – The Penn State Berks softball team finished off its spring break trip in Myrtle Beach on a positive note with a 2-1 record. The Nittany Lions had an offensive outburst in a 9-0 win over Wentworth to start the day. Milligan College then won 9-0 and the Lions then edged out Penn State Beaver 4-3 in the finale.

In the opening win over Wentworth, the Nittany Lions (3-4) bats came to life with two runs in second, five in the third and two more in the fourth. The game was halted in the fifth due to the mercy rule.

Alyssa Stahly and Larissa Tenley got the powered Berks in the win. Stahly went 2-for-2 at the dish with a double and four runs batted in. Tenley picked up the win after scattering just four hits and not surrendering a run. She also struck out four batters.

In the loss to Milligan, Casey Hafer singled on the first pitch of the game. The Buffaloes (12-11) controlled the contest the rest of the way. They added four runs in the first, two in the second and third and one more in the fourth.

The Nittany Lions bounced back with a thrilling win over Penn State Beaver. Dayna Harrison ripped a three-run home run over the wall in left center to open up a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Hafer added an RBI single in the top of the second to go up 4-0. Kate Harley went 2-for-3 with two doubles.

Penn State Beaver countered with three in the bottom of the second, but they were never able to tie the game. Devon Denker threw the first two innings, giving up three runs – two earned – and striking out two. Tenley surrendered just two hits over the next two innings and handed the game over to Hafer.

Hafer earned the win after allowing just one hit over the final three innings. The freshman right hander struck out four.

The Nittany Lions will return home with a doubleheader against Stevenson on Tuesday, March 15 at 2 p.m.
