READING, PA (March 15, 2011) - The Penn State Berks softball team dropped both games of its home opener against Stevenson University on Tuesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. Berks fell 11-3 in the opener and lost 10-0 in the second game.
The Nittany Lions (3-6) pounded out 12 hits in the opener and built a 3-1 lead after five innings. Dayna Harrison drove in a run in the first and third inning and Devon Denker added an RBI single in the fifth. Freshman Casey Hafer went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Ashley Barbiero had a hit and scored a run.
In the top of the sixth the Mustangs (5-2) came to life with an eight spot and followed with two in the seventh. Lindsay Kuczak had a bases clearing triple during the scoring spree.
Shari Lynn Kluth, Marissa Ruggiero and Harrison each finished with three hits. Ruggiero was 2-for-2 in the second game. Hafer pitched four innings of scoreless relief. She struck out seven batters and scattered three hits.
The Nittany Lions will travel to Eastern University on Monday, March 21 for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
