Softball picks up first win of the 2011 season

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 8, 2011) - The Penn State Berks softball team split a double header with the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Tuesday, winning 9-1 before falling 7-6 in eight innings.

The Nittany Lions (1-3) scored in bunches in their victory. Six runners scored in the third and then three in the sixth to end the game with the eight-run rule.

Freshman Dayna Harrison knocked in Brittany Hicks to put the mercy rule into effect. Harrison enjoyed a monster day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in. Hicks finished 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Marissa Ruggiero and Shari Lynn Kluth each scored two runs for the Berks. Ashley Heeman also added an RBI single.

Larissa Tenley picked up the win in the pitcher's circle for the Nittany Lions. The junior right hander pitched all six innings, allowing just one unearned run and striking out four. She scattered six hits and issued only one free pass.

The Nittany Lions nearly earned a sweep, but the Owls (3-6) staged a late rally with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Owls then plated one run in the eighth to finish off the comeback.

Ruggiero, Devon Denker and Ashley Barbiero each singled in a run in the opening frame as Berks jumped out to a three run lead before UMPI even came to the plate.

VICKI GRAVER and Kate Harley each finished 2-for-4 and Casey Hafer went 1-for-2 with a double.

Denker and Hafer shared the pitching duties. Denker suffered the loss after pitching the first three innings and final two. In her five innings of work, Denker allowed six runs – three earned – while striking out four. Hafer allowed just one hit over three innings and struck out seven.

The Nittany Lions will finish off their spring break tomorrow morning with three games beginning with Wentworth at 9:30 a.m.
