MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 5, 2011) – The Penn State Berks baseball team dropped a pair of contests on the second day of their spring break trip. Berks fell 9-2 in the morning to Ohio Northern University and then suffered an 11-6 setback to Allegheny College.
The Nittany Lions (1-3) struggled getting the offense going, combining for just eight hits in the two games. Geraldo Garcia collected two of the five hits in the first game, while the trio of Connor Corson, Rich Schlamowitz and Ryan Tantala recorded the only hits against Allegheny. Corson has recorded at least one hit in all four games this season.
In the opening game, the Nittany Lions sliced the deficit to 4-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Aaron Wilkins, Garcia and Corson strung together three straight singles to load the bases. Schlamowitz walked to force in a run and Nick Vitelli flew out to center to score Garcia.
That is as close as the Berks would get as the Polar Bears (5-0) put up five runs in the next four innings.
Jade Hendrick allowed eight hits and five runs in his five innings pitched. He registered two strikeouts. Corey Jackson and David Loose pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for the Lions.
Ohio Northern received three hits from Matt Hampshire and Eric Yunker. Lefthander Austin Price earned the win after striking out eight and scattering four hits over six innings of work.
Berks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game with an RBI single by Corson and a safety squeeze by Dillon Landrigan. The Gators (3-0) then grabbed the lead with a run in the fourth, five in the sixth and two in the seventh. The Nittany Lions cut the lead to 8-6 in the top of the eighth, but Allegheny countered with three in their half.
The Nittany Lions will take on Wilkes University in a twin bill tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
