Baseball falls to Albright in 2011 season opener

READING, PA (March 2, 2011) - The Penn State Berks baseball team dropped its season opener, 8-5, to cross-town rival Albright College on Wednesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Complex.

The Nittany Lions (0-1) were hindered by costly errors in the field and some bad luck on the bases. Berks gave up three unearned runs and hit into three double plays to erase their scoring threats.

Sophomore Nick Vitelli went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in three runs. Kyle Hartman also had two hits and recorded one RBI. Junior Rich Schlamowitz scored two runs and stole two bases.

Berks didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard as they put two runners across the plate in the opening frame. With two outs, Schlamowitz and Connor Corson drew walks and came in to score on consecutive singles by Vitelli and Hartman.

Albright scored all of its runs with three in both the fourth and sixth inning. The Nittany Lions notched three runs in the fifth inning. Aaron Wilkins singled, stole second and came around to score on a single down the left field line by Kevin Heilman. Three batters later, Vitelli put a ball in the gap in right center, scoring two and hustling into second for a double.

Freshman Zach Guiles received a no-decision after going leaving the game with one out in the top of the fifth. He surrendered three runs - all earned - and struck out four.

Heilman nearly escaped unscathed from a bases loaded jam in the sixth, but a pair of errors put Albright on top (6-5) for good. Bryer Eshbach and Ryan Tantala pitched a perfect eighth and ninth inning for the Nittany Lions.

Jojo Fisher led the Albright attack with two hits and three RBIs. Nate Peiffer scored three runs and Matt Pannella added two. Tyler Meckley pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win.

The Nittany Lions will head to Myrtle Beach for their annual spring break trip beginning on Friday. They will play nine games in five days, starting with Alma College on March 4.
