Volleyball splits on first day of Crusader Classic

SELINSGROVE, PA (October 7, 2011) – The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team split its matches on the first day of the Hampton Inn Crusader Classic hosted by Susquehanna University on Friday evening.

The Nittany Lions fell 3-0 to Elmira College, marking the first time this season that they lost back-to-back matches. Berks would not allow that streak to grow any more, bouncing back with a 3-0 win over Albright College.

Berks started the contest against Albright with its foot on the throttle, winning game one by a score of 25-9. They followed with a 25-12 and 25-16 to down Albright for the second time this season. Berks won at home, 3-0, on September 6.

Amy Shelton combined for 18 kills in the two matches and six solo blocks, five of which came in the opener against Elmira. Kayla Mosser was consistent with six kills in both contests.

Against Albright, freshman Maria Pavone recorded six kills and a season-best two solo blocks. Kaitlyn Schmeck chipped in five kills and two aces. Kaitlyn Schmeck had 24 assists and a team-leading nine digs.

The Nittany Lions struggled against Soaring Eagles (14-1) in the opener, recording just 23 kills and committing 10 errors. Berks bounced back with 33 kills and a .312 hitting percentage against Albright.

Berks will face host Susquehanna University at 1 p.m. tomorrow, followed by King's College at 3 p.m.
