READING, PA (October 5, 2011) – The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback to DeSales University in the 2nd annual “Dig Pink” match at Beaver Community Center on Wednesday evening.
The Nittany Lions (14-3) were sporting pink t-shirts to show their support for the cause. The event raised an estimated $330.50 through donations and sales from specially designed pink t-shirts. The crowd was a sea of pink apparel from the majority of the 132 fans in attendance.
Once the contest started, the Bulldogs took immediate control of the match. They won by set scores of 25-12, 25-19 and 25-13.
Amy Shelton led all players with 13 kills. Shelton, the two-time reigning NEAC Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Week, also assisted on two blocks. Victoria Young had a team-high nine digs, followed by Kaitlyn Schmeck with seven.
DeSales had a balanced offensive attack, led by Julie Blessing's nine kills and two aces. Justine McNulty recorded 25 assists, 15 digs and six kills.
The Nittany Lions will travel to Selinsgrove for the Susquehanna Tournament this weekend. On Friday, Berks will face Elmira College (6 pm) and Albright College (8 pm). On Saturday morning, the Nittany Lions will take on host Susquehanna (10 am) and finish off with King's College (2 pm).
