Nittany Lions go 1-1 in regular season finale

YORK, PA (October 29, 2011) – The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team split its regular-season finale, defeating Goucher College, 3-1, and dropping a 3-0 decision to host York College on Saturday morning in Charles Wolf Gym.

The Nittany Lions (21-7) took the first two games against Goucher by scores of 25-15 and 25-21. The Gophers (11-23) grabbed the third game 25-17, but Berks emerged with the victory in with a 32-30 thriller. In the second match, the Spartans (15-16) swept with scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-14.

Amy Shelton led the Nittany Lions in kills in both matches, combining for 21. Kayla Mosser followed with 14 kills on the day. Courtney Lucarelli had a team-high 18 digs with 10 coming against Goucher, while Victoria Young chipped in 15.

Against the Gophers, freshman setter Kaitlyn Schmeck recorded four kills, 26 assists and seven digs. Berks combined for five aces in the win, Young had two, while Steph Semple, Rachel Sweeney and Lucarelli each had one. Shelton had a contest-high four solo blocks.

The Nittany Lions will host the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship next Friday and Saturday. Berks, who finished the conference at 10-0, will play Saturday at 11 a.m. against Friday night's quarterfinal winner between Lancaster Bible College (No. 4 seed) and Keuka College (No. 5 seed).
