Volleyball reaches 20-wins for second straight year

READING, PA (October 22, 2011) – The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team reached 20 wins for the second time in program history after sweeping Alvernia University and Cedar Crest College on Saturday morning.

With two regular-season matches remaining and a run in the postseason, the Nittany Lions (20-6) could surpass the record of 25 wins set last season.

In the opener, Berks won by game scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-17. Maria Pavone recorded a career-best 11 kills to lead the Nittany Lions. Kaitlyn Schmeck also established a personal-best in kills with six. The freshman setter gave a strong all around performance with 32 assists, six digs and four service aces.

The Nittany Lion defense compiled 67 digs, with the majority coming from Victoria Young (16) and Steph Semple (14). Jennifer Nawa chipped in five digs and added an ace.

Berks won by scores of 25-14, 25-23, 25-12 in its sweep over Cedar Crest. Amy Shelton, who finished the day with 25 kills, recorded 15 and committed just one error against the Falcons. The sophomore middle blocker has racked up 315 kills this season with a .375 hitting percentage.

Rachel Sweeney had eight kills in both contests and registered four of the Nittany Lions seven aces against Cedar Crest. Christina Pettet added four kills, while Courtney Lucarelli had a team-high 14 digs and Semple followed with 13.

The Nittany Lions will cap off the regular season with a tri-match at York College on Saturday, October 29. They will face Goucher College at 1 p.m. and York at 3 p.m.
