Volleyball drops non-conference contest with Widener

CHESTER, PA (October 20, 2011) – The Penn State Berks women's volleyball dropped its match against a strong Widener University squad, that hit .322 from the floor, in straight-sets for a victory in scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-8.

The Nittany Lions (18-6) were again led by sophomore sensation Amy Shelton, who finished the contest with a match-high 15 kills to run her season total up to 290. That total is the second most in a single-season, trailing the 387 she recorded last season.

Freshman Kayla Mosser added six kills for the Nittany Lions, and setter Kaitlyn Schmeck had 20 assists in the contest. Victoria Young, who was named the NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, had a team-high 15 digs.

The Pride (19-9) used a balanced attack with Nicole Merton registering a team-high seven kills, followed by two teammates with six kills each. Widener collected 16 block assists in the contest.

The Nittany Lions will look to get back on track with contests against Cedar Crest and tri-match host Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon.
