READING, PA – The Penn State Berks women's tennis team dropped its home opener by a score of 5-4 against Baptist Bible University on Thursday afternoon.
Despite the match already being clinched for the Defenders (5-3), the Nittany Lions had a lot of effort and determination from the bottom half of the singles lineup.
In the No. 6 singles, Meghan Hartley finished her match as the sun had set and the rest of the matches had finished around her. Hartley took the first set by a 7-5 score. With the second set even at 6-6, Hartley clinched the match with an 8-6 tiebreaker.
Melissa Boyer, playing in the fifth singles flight, earned an 8-6 win over Rebecca Wagner. She teamed with Liz Martinez in the third doubles slot for an 8-3 win, giving Boyer a 4-0 record over the past two matches.
Rebecca Loewenstein-Harting earned the other Nittany Lion victory, playing out of No. 4 singles. She downed Sarah Salzmann by set scores of 6-1 and 6-3.
The women will travel to Alvernia on Wednesday, September 29 for a 4:00 p.m. nonconference contest.
