Berks volleyball falls 3-1 to Kutztown

PINE GROVE, PA (September 20, 2010) – The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team battled tough against Kutztown University, falling 3-1 on Monday afternoon at Pine Grove Middle School.

The Nittany Lions (7-2) opened with a 26-24 win in the opening set. In the second set, Berks came back from a 15-8 deficit for a late 18-16 lead. Kutztown used a 9-3 run to take the set 25-21 and even the match at one apiece. The Golden Bears (9-3) closed out the match with set scores of 25-14 and 25-13.

The Lions showed a lot of heart going against Division II Kutztown, using tight defensive play. The team recorded 80 digs in the four sets, including 20 by freshman libero KATIE SOSTAK.

Freshman AMY SHELTON continued her offensive domination, recording a team-high 15 kills compared to five errors on 39 attempts. GLENDA NGO handed out 30 assists, 13 digs and one service ace. JERICA DETSCH had seven kills and 11 digs, while SUZI SHELTON had six kills.

AMY SHELTON had two solo blocks and paired up with CHRISTINE KANTONIDES on two block assists.

The match was played in honor of former Golden Bear Shannon Sullivan who passed away from a car accident in August of 2006.

The women will begin North Eastern Athletic Conference play with four matches this weekend at Penn State Abington.
