Scheidt's goal in double overtime lifts Berks to win

KEUKA PARK, NY (September 12, 2010) - Alyssa Scheidt scored a goal late in the second overtime to lead the Penn State women's soccer team to a 4-3 win over Keuka College in Sunday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest.

Keuka outshot Berks 5-4 in the two overtime periods, but all it took was a shot off a diving header by Scheidt to finish off the match. Ari Fuentes, who opened contest with her first goal of the season, assisted Scheidt on the game winner.

Junior goalkeeper Cassidy Dawson had a season-high 16 saves to help the Nittany Lions improve to 2-0 in the NEAC standings. Dawson was kept busy all day as the Storm managed 37 shots, 20 of which were on goal.

Fuentes did not waste any time getting the scoring started off with a goal four minutes and 58 seconds into the contest. Keuka responded with a Nicole Sharick goal 42 seconds later. Taylor Kreider pulled Berks ahead with a goal, the assist came from Lyndsay Naughton. But again, the Storm responded with a late first half goal to head into the break even at two.

Scheidt scored an unassisted goal at the 68:37 mark for a 3-2 lead. In the past two games, Scheidt has racked up six goals and one assist.

The seesaw battle continued when Alyssa Hermenet found the back of the net with 20 seconds left in regulation. Scheidt and the resilient Nittany Lions squad refused to let the match slip away, as they entered overtime for the first time since November 1, 2008.

The Berks women will host King's College on Thursday, September 16 at 4 p.m. in a nonconference contest.
