Berks volleyball takes two at Cedar Crest

Allentown, PA (September 11, 2010) - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team improved to 4-0 on the season after defeating Alvernia University and host Cedar Crest College on Saturday afternoon.

In the two matches, SUZI SHELTON racked up a team-high 28 kills, seven aces and three solo blocks. JERICA DETSCH added 23 kills and 30 digs, 25 of which came in the Cedar Crest match.

AMY SHELTON finished the day with 20 kills and four blocks, while GLENDA NGO had 73 assists and 24 digs. Freshman libero KATIE SOSTAK finished with a team-best 19 digs against Alvernia, followed by 12 against Cedar Crest.

The Nittany Lions made quick work of Cedar Crest with a three set sweep by scores of 25-14, 25-9 and 25-15. In the morning contest with Alvernia, however, Berks dropped its first set of the year and had to come back from a 2-1 deficit.

After taking the first set 25-16, the Crusaders won games two (26-24) and three (25-22). The Nittany Lions then had a convincing 25-14 win and won the clincher 15-10.

"I am really proud of their perserverance today," said head coach Jessie Franko. "They rallied from down 2-1 and came back strong to win it."

In the win over Alvernia, Berks combined for 50 kills and nine aces. The Nittany Lions were very efficient against Cedar Crest with 44 kills and only six errors.

The women will be back in action on Tuesday, September 14 with a 7 p.m. road match at Bryn Mawr.
