Sue McDonough

Sue McDonough begins her fifth season at Penn State Berks and second as the head coach for the 2019-20 season. McDonough was previously the assistant coach alongside Scott Yarnell, leading the teams to multiple championships during their time together.

McDonough took over as the coach for the spring portion of the 2018-19 season. The men's tennis team finished 3-11 overall and went 1-3 in the NEAC. The men's team had four members earn All-NEAC honors in singles and all three doubles teams received honors, including Curtis Uhle and Diego Olazagasti, who won the No. 1 doubles tournament. The women's team went 4-9 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Alyssa Miller won the No. 1 singles tournament to earn NEAC Player of the Year and All-NEAC First Team honors. Five others earned second or third team honors in singles play. All three women's doubles teams were All-NEAC Third Team recipients.


The 2017-18 women's tennis team won the NEAC Championship title for the third time in four years and ninth time in program history. They became the first team in program history to make the NCAA Tournament, where they were defeated by SUNY Geneseo. The Nittany Lions finished the season 9-6 overall and went 5-0 in conference action. Alyssa Miller was named the NEAC Rookie of the Year and Scott Yarnell was selected as the NEAC Coach of the Year. The team had two singles players and one doubles team win during the individual tournaments and thus earn a spot on the All-NEAC First Team.

The men's team had also had great success in the 2017-18 season. They reached double digit wins for the second straight year after going 10-7 overall and 5-0 in the NEAC. The team won the NEAC Championship for the second straight season after topping Penn State Abington 5-1. Berks then lost to the NAC Champion, Colby-Sawyer College with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line. Curtis Uhle was chosen as the NEAC Rookie of the Year and Scott Yarnell was selected as the NEAC Coach of the Year. The team had two singles players and one doubles team win during the individual tournaments and thus earn a spot on the All-NEAC First Team.

In the 2016-17 season, the women's tennis team finished 9-7 overall and went 5-1 in conference play. They picked up a 5-0 victory over Lancaster Bible College in the NEAC Semifinal round, before falling to Penn State Abington, 5-2, in the NEAC Title game.

On the men's side, the 2016-17 team enjoyed one of their finest years in program-history after finishing 10-6 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The team then topped Penn State Abington, 6-3, in the title game to win the conference championship for the first time since the 2008-09 season. The 10 victories were also the first time the team reached double-digits in wins since the 2008-09 season.

In the 2014-15 campaign, the women's team was 9-10 overall and were 6-1 in the NEAC. They would avenge their only conference loss by defeating Penn State Abington, 5-3, in the NEAC Championship match. The Nittany Lions then fell to Colby-Sawyer College in the NEAC/NAC Championship.

The 2014-15 men's squad finished 6-10 overall and were 4-1 in conference. They closed out the regular season with five straight wins by a score of 9-0 and then defeated Penn College, 5-0, in the NEAC Semifinal round. The Nittany Lions were then defeated by Penn State Abington in their first trip back to the NEAC Championship since the 2011-12 season.

McDonough takes over the helm with over 15 years of collegiate tennis coaching experience, including 11 years as head women’s tennis coach at Ursinus College where she won the Coach of the Year award in 2009-10. She is a current member of the Buxmont 5-year championship at Frog Hollow Racquet Club in Worcester, playing the #1 position. McDonough is also a top-level competitor of many club teams and USTA doubles and mixed doubles teams around the area. In the fall, she coaches the Pope John Paul II high school girl’s tennis team in Royersford. During the summer months, she is the director of the Palmer Park Tennis Camp in Skippack, where she teaches children 4-18 years old. She is a 25 -year member of the USTA and has a 15- year certification from the PTR.
