Scott Yarnell

Scott Yarnell will enter his 15th year as the women's tennis coach and seventh as the men's coach in the 2018-19 season. He has been named the NEAC Tennis Coach of the Year eight times on the women's side and twice on the men's side.

Yarnell earned his 100th career win with the women's team with a 9-0 victory over the College of Saint Elizabeth on April 19, 2013. He currently has a record of 143-88 with the women and is 49-47 as the men's coach. Yarnell ranks as the winningest coach in program-history for both the women's and men's programs.

The 2017-18 women's tennis team won the NEAC Championship title for the third time in four years and ninth all-time. They became the first team in program history to make the NCAA Tournament, where they were defeated by SUNY Geneseo. The Nittany Lions finished the season 9-6 overall and went 5-0 in conference action. Alyssa Miller was named the NEAC Rookie of the Year and Yarnell was selected as the NEAC Coach of the Year. The team had two singles players and one doubles team win during the individual tournaments and thus earn a spot on the All-NEAC First Team.

The men's team also had great success in the 2017-18 season. They reached double digit wins for the second straight year after going 10-7 overall and 5-0 in the NEAC. The team won the NEAC Championship for the second straight season after topping Penn State Abington 5-1. Berks then lost to the NAC Champion, Colby-Sawyer College with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line. Curtis Uhle was chosen as the NEAC Rookie of the Year and Yarnell was selected as the NEAC Coach of the Year. The team had two singles players and one doubles team win during the individual tournaments and thus earn a spot on the All-NEAC First Team.

In the 2016-17 season, the women's tennis team finished 9-7 overall and went 5-1 in conference play. They picked up a 5-0 victory over Lancaster Bible College in the NEAC Semifinal round, before falling to Penn State Abington, 5-2, in the NEAC Title game.

On the men's squad, the 2016-17 team enjoyed one of their finest years in program-history after finishing 10-6 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The team then topped Penn State Abington, 6-3, in the title game to win the conference championship for the first time since the 2008-09 season. The 10 victories were also the first time the team reached double-digits in wins since the 2008-09 season. The Nittany Lions had the NAC Co-Rookie of the Year (Diego Olazagasti) and Yarnell was picked as the Coach of the Year.

The 2015-16 saw the women's squad finish 8-9 overall and 6-1 in the conference. They defeated Penn State Abington, 5-4, in the West Division Championship match, marking their fourth title in the last five years. The Nittany Lions then fell to Colby-Sawyer College in the NEAC/NAC Championship.

In the 2014-15 campaign, the women's team was 9-10 overall and were 6-1 in the NEAC. They would avenge their only conference loss by defeating Penn State Abington, 5-3, in the NEAC Championship match. The Nittany Lions then fell to Colby-Sawyer College in the NEAC/NAC Championship.

The 2014-15 men's squad finished 6-10 overall and were 4-1 in conference. They closed out the regular season with five straight wins by a score of 9-0 and then defeated Penn College, 5-0, in the NEAC Semifinal round. The Nittany Lions were then defeated by Penn State Abington in their first trip back to the NEAC Championship since the 2011-12 season.

The 2013-14 season saw Yarnell coach both the male and female NEAC Player of the Year, as Drew Weinhold and Crystal Hitz won their respective No. 1 singles tournaments. Yarnell also guided both teams to the postseason tournament and the teams combined to earn 15 All-Conference selections.

The 2013-14 women's squad upset No. 1 seed Penn State Abington, 5-4, to head to the NEAC Championship round for the fifth straight season and seventh time in the last eight years. Berks was edged 5-4 by Keuka College in the title game. They finished the season with a 5-13 overall record and were 3-3 in the conference. The men were defeated, 5-2, by Penn State Abington, which went on to win the NEAC Championship.

The 2012-13 women's team won its sixth NEAC Western Division title, but again fell to the NEAC Eastern champ with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line. Yarnell was named the NEAC Western Division Coach of the Year for the fifth time. The Nittany Lions finished the season with a record of 12-4 overall and won the conference regular-season after going 7-0.

Yarnell guided the 2012-13 men's squad to a 7-6 record overall and 3-3 in the North Atlantic Conference. In the NAC Individual Tournament, Drew Weinhold won the No. 1 singles tournament to earn NAC Player of the Year honors. He was also voted the NAC Rookie of the Year, which was selected by the coaches.

In the 2011-12 season, Berks went 10-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference with the women's tennis team. In the NEAC Championship, the Nittany Lions avenged their only regular season conference loss by defeating Wells College, 5-4.

 

Coach Yarnell earned his degree in Criminal Justice from Alvernia College, where he was a member of the basketball and tennis teams. He is currently employed as a State Parole Officer for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and previously served as the head men's basketball coach at Penn State Berks.
