CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Penn State Berks faced Wilson College in the United East Quarterfinals series, falling twice to be eliminated from the tournament on Saturday, May 2. The Nittany Lions fell 8-4 in the first game and 8-0 in the second.
In Game 1, Wilson capitalized on a throwing error in the first inning, leading to an unearned run and a 1-0 lead. In the third inning,
Haylie Mauger walked and later scored on an RBI single by
Anna Laughlin, putting the Nittany Lions on the board. However, Wilson responded strongly with five runs, aided by multiple hits, including a double by Sydney Hartle, making the score 7–1 after three innings.
Berks showed resilience in the fourth inning.
Samantha Harple singled and eventually scored on
Maura Gorman's RBI single.
Autumn Weil and
Alexa Burkey also crossed home plate, narrowing the gap to 7-4. Wilson managed one run in the bottom half, maintaining their lead. The remaining innings saw Berks unable to add to their score, and Wilson's defense held firm, finalizing the score at 8–4 in favor of Wilson.
Samantha Harple led her team with two hits, including a double, while also scoring a run.
Haylie Mauger contributed with two hits, an RBI, a walk, and a stolen base.
Natasha Hornung recorded a hit and a stolen base, successfully catching a runner stealing.
Maura Gorman pitched a complete game, striking out two batters while allowing 14 hits and eight runs, six earned, bringing her season record to 3-4.
In Game 2, Berks struggled offensively, managing only two hits and failing to score against Wilson's 11 hits. The game started with
Natasha Hornung singling to right center and stealing second, but the inning ended scoreless for the Blue & White. Wilson took an early lead in the first inning, scoring twice, with Emily Randalls scoring on a groundout and Katelyn Keller crossing home on a double, leading 2-0.
Wilson extended its lead in the third inning when Sydney Hartle doubled to right center, driving in Emily Randalls. By the end of the third, the score was 3-0. The fourth inning saw Wilson explode for five runs, highlighted by Kiera O'Brine's triple that brought in two runs and Katelyn Keller's single adding two more. Sydney Hartle capped the scoring for the inning with another double, bringing home Keller, making it 8-0.
The Nittany Lions were unable to score throughout the game, resulting in an 8-0 loss.
Natasha Hornung and
Samantha Harple each recorded one hit and a stolen base.
Mallory Johnson pitched a complete game over 4 innings, allowing 11 hits and 8 earned runs while issuing two walks, marking her third loss of the season with a record of 3-10.
