KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Penn State Berks faced a challenging day at THE Spring Games, falling to Rhode Island College 5-1 in their second game of the tournament after losing 4-0 to Montclair State in their opener.
In the matchup against Rhode Island College, Penn State Berks managed three hits, including two doubles. The Anchorwomen took an early lead in the second inning with Melanie Earley scoring on a passed ball, followed by a two-run homer from Lily Bell. Brianna Bailey later scored on an error, ending the second inning with a score of 4-0 in favor of Rhode Island College.
Penn State Berks responded in the fourth inning when
Natasha Hornung walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Maura Gorman, bringing the score to 4-1. However, the Anchorwomen extended their lead in the fifth inning with Joey Meyer scoring on a single by Melanie Earley, finalizing the score at 5-1.
Hornung contributed significantly, hitting a double and scoring a run, finishing with an OPS of 1.667.
Emma Infantino also added a double, recording one of the team's hits and contributing four assists from the shortstop position. Gorman drove in a run and added a hit in three at-bats. In the circle,
Mallory Johnson pitched four innings, striking out two batters while allowing six hits and three earned runs.
Earlier in the day, against Montclair State, Penn State Berks struggled offensively, remaining scoreless throughout the game despite a double by
Emma Infantino in the seventh inning. The Red Hawks took the lead in the third inning when Carlee Iannone hit a single that drove in Sophia Alonso. They extended their lead in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly by Leah Monschein, and then added two more runs in the seventh inning, concluding the game at 4-0.
Autumn Weil was a standout at the plate against Montclair State, posting two hits and maintaining an OPS of 1.333.
Paige Brightwell pitched a complete game, striking out five batters over seven innings while allowing four runs on eight hits and only issuing one walk, showcasing effective control throughout her outing.
