Softball Falls on Opening Day

Kissimmee, FL- The Penn St. Berks Softball Team opened its 2025 season by taking on Wheaton College (MA) and Ursinus College in a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 8.

The Lions (0-2 Overall) relied on starting pitcher Paige Brightwell to keep Wheaton (MA) (1-0 Overall), off the scoreboard until the offense found its footing. Brightwell held the Lyons to 2 hits through the first three innings. Wheaton broke through in the fourth inning, using three hits to score the first two runs of the game. The Lyons added another run in the top of the fifth inning to extend their advantage.

Peyton Vivian tried to the Lions offense going in the bottom of the fifth inning, smacking a single into left field. She would move into scoring position, but she could not but Berks on the board. The Lions could not start a late rally as Wheaton held Berks to only one hit on their way to a 4-0 victory.

The Lions got a solid opening day pitching performance from Brightwell, who went 7.0 innings allowing all four runs on nine hits while striking out four.

Berks looked to reset for game two as they took on Ursinus College (2-3 Overall), getting off to a better start. Kylie Krauss led off the game by working a walk and stealing second base. Vivian crushed a double into left field, scoring Krauss to give Berks a 1-0 lead. The Bears answered right back, scoring in the bottom of the inning to level the score at one.

Ursinus scored twice in the bottom of the third inning to retake the lead. Berks looked to answer in the top of the sixth inning. Haylie Mauger led off the inning by lifting a single over the first baseman. Vivian then rocketed a single to third base and Jaredis Flores singled up the middle to load the bases. Anna Laughlin hammered a double off the base of the left field fence, scoring both runners and tying the game at three.

Ursinus quickly answered, scoring a run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to surge back in front. The Lions had one last chance to even the score in the top of the seventh inning. Krauss hammered a double off the left field fence and eventually advanced to third. She then scored on a wild pitch, tying the game at four. Berks could not capture the lead; however, Ursinus scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the walk-off victory.

The Lions offense was led by Vivian, who went 2-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Anna Laughlin made a splash in her first game in the Blue & White, belting a two RBI double as part of her 2-3 performance. Krauss also found ways to reach base, going 1-3 with a double, scoring twice.
