Softball Bows Out of United East Championship Tournament

MIDDLETOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks Softball team ended its season as the Lions fell twice in the United East Championship Tournament on Friday, May 3. The Lions fell to Penn College by a score of 4-0 in the first game of the day and dropped game two to Penn St. Abington by a score of 6-4.  

GAME 1 

Berks fell behind early in the first game as #2 Penn College scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Berks struggled to string together base runners, but they threaten to score in the top of the third inning. Hayden Perrone singled to short stop and then stole second base to move herself into scoring position. Berks could not bring her home.  

The Wildcats added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to hold a 4-0 lead. The Lions tried to start a rally in the top of the sixth inning. Perrone led off the inning by drawing a walk. Savannah Wilson and Mallory Duff each advanced Perrone, moving her over to third base. The Lions could not capitalize, and eventually fell by a score of 4-0.  

GAME 2 

The Lions took on #4 Penn St. Abington in game two and they once again fell behind early as Abington plated five total runs in the first two innings. Berks answered back, scoring in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs in the inning, Peyton Vivian hammered a double down the left field line. Lauren Ziegler drove in the team's first run, smashing a double that scored Vivian.  

Berks tried to start another rally, but could not get a timely hit, trailing 6-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. The Lions had their backs against the wall and needed to have a big inning to stay alive. Paige Brightwell lined a single through the left side to start the rally. Vivian singled down the left field line putting a pair of runners on base. Ziegler came through again, smashing a double into center field, plating two runners to make the score 6-3. Alexa Burkey singled to short stop allowing Ziegler to score, pulling the Lions within two. Berks could not complete the comeback, falling 6-4.
