Softball Sweeps Abington

ABINGTON, PA - The Penn State Berks Softball team avenged an earlier season defeat, sweeping Penn St. Abington on Saturday, Apr. 13. The Lion took game one 5-0 before winning the nightcap 4-2.

GAME 1

The Lions overcame a slow offensive start, taking the lead in the fourth inning. Naomi Fay led off the inning by drawing a walk and then stealing second base. Later in the inning, Paige Brightwell reached base on a fielders' choice, advancing to third and allowing Fay to score. Emily Smith grounded out to shortstop, allowing Brightwell to score. Lauren Ziegler fired up the dugout, launching a solo home run over the center field fence, making the score 3-0.

In the circle, Brightwell was once again impressive holding Abington scoreless. She only allowed six total hits while striking out nine batters.

Berks tacked on more runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Rylee Tineri pinch hit in the sixth inning, reaching base on fielders' choice that allowed Brightwell to score. In the seventh inning, Brightwell lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Savannah Wilson to make the score 5-0. Abington would have two runners reach base in the bottom of the inning, but Brightwell pitched out of the jam securing the victory.

GAME 2

Berks fell behind early in game two as Abington scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Lions looked to answer right back in the top of the third inning. Ziegler and Smith drew walks while Peyton Vivian singled to load the bases. Mallory Duff reached base with a fielders' choice that allowed Ziegler to score. Tineri smacked a double into left field, allowing another run to score and level the game at two.

Duff had another strong pitching performance allowing only two runs on six hits. In addition, she racked up six strikeouts.

The game remained tied at two entering the seventh inning. Fay led off the inning by laying down an excellent bunt single. Ziegler singled into right center field moving Fay over to third. Fay scored on a wild pitch putting Berks ahead 3-2. Later in the inning, Ashlyn Sherwood, who came on to pinch run for Ziegler, scored on a wild pitch to give the Lions a two-run lead. Duff did not allow Abington to have a runner reach base in the bottom of the inning, securing the 4-2 victory.
