Softball Takes One From Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks Softball team split its doubleheader with local foe Penn St. Harrisburg on Tuesday, Apr. 9. The Lion took game one 2-0 before falling 2-0 in game two.

GAME 1

The Lions took an early lead in the opening game, scoring in the second inning. Ashley Thomas started the rally by drawing a walk and stealing second base. Emily Smith drove a single up the middle allowing Thomas to race around the bases and score. Jaden Pyle hammered a double down the left field line, scoring Smith to put Berks ahead 2-0.

The two runs were plenty for starting pitcher Paige Brightwell who kept Harrisburg off balance throughout the game. Brightwell pitched all 7.0 innings, allowing four hits and striking out three. Berks held the home team to only one baserunner in the final two innings to secure the victory.

GAME 2

The Berks offense struggled to find its rhythm in the nightcap, being held to only six hits in the game. Meanwhile Harrisburg would plate runs in the first and fifth innings to build a 2-0 advantage. Starting pitcher Mallory Duff kept the Harrisburg's offense in check, only allowing seven hits throughout her 6.0 innings of action.

The Lions best chance to score came in the fifth inning. Thomas laid down a fantastic bunt, reaching base and then stealing second base to put herself in scoring position. Hayden Perrone moved Thomas over to third with a ground ball, but the Lions could not bring her home. Berks was not able to pull off a late rally, falling 2-0.
