Softball splits season opener in Florida

KISSIMMEE, FL - The Penn State Berks softball team split its season opening games on the first day of The Spring Games in Florida on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions fell 5-1 to Cabrini University, but followed that up with an 8-0 victory in five innings over Chatham University.

Against Cabrini, the Nittany Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Peyton Vivian had a sacrifice fly to score Hayden Perrone. The Cavaliers responded with a pair of runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to earn the win.

Perrone finished the game 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Rylee Tineri went 1-for-2. Paige Brightwell allowed five runs (four earned), while striking out one in 6.0 innings of work.

In the next game, Berks put up a run in the third and pushed across five more in the third to take control of the game. They tacked on two more in the fourth to go ahead 8-0.

Mallory Duff was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Naomi Fay and Vivian were each 1-for-3 with two runs scored, while Maura Gorman and Jaden Pyle each had a hit and scored a run. Perrone finished with one hit and drove in a pair of runs, Tineri recorded a hit and had an RBI.

Duff turned in a strong performance in the circle. The sophomore right-hander allowed two hits and struck out five in a complete-game shutout.

The Nittany Lions return to action tomorrow with games against Thomas College (12:15 pm) and University of Dubuque (2:30 pm).
