Men's tennis edged by Alvernia, 6-3

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's tennis team suffered a 6-3 setback to Alvernia University in the Nittany Lions season opener on Thursday afternoon at the Gring's Mill Tennis Courts.

The Nittany Lions open up the year with an 0-1 record, while the Golden Wolves now sit at 1-2 in the fall.

Berks jumped out to a 2-1 lead following the doubles action. The No. 1 duo of Muhammad Esmat and Jazae Maina-Itegi picked up an 8-2 victory, while Weston Weaver and Donovan Sullivan won an 8-6 thriller at the second spot. Rajas Joshi and Alan Ngo battled at third doubles, but were topped 8-3.

Esmat picked up the Nittany Lions lone point in singles action, winning by a score of 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 1 flight. Sullivan (No. 3) and Weaver (No. 4) both dropped a three-set heartbreaker, while Maina-Itegi (No. 2) and Ngo (No. 6) were topped in tough bouts.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Albright College for a non-conference match on Wednesday, September 27 at 3:30 p.m.
