Men's tennis opens spring with win over McDaniel

FINKSBURG, MD - The Penn State Berks men's tennis team opened up the spring portion of its schedule with a 6-3 victory on the road over McDaniel College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (4-0) grabbed a pair of the doubles bouts to jump out to an early 2-1 lead. The No. 1 tandem of Jazae Maina-Itegi and Wester Weaver cruised to an 8-0 victory, while the No. 3 pair of Cole Epting and Jack Filip won 12-10 in the tiebreak for an 8-7 win. Donovan Sullivan and Daniel Popovici were narrowly edged, 8-7 (10-3) in the second spot.

In singles action, Sullivan (No. 2) was an 8-1 winner, while Weaver (No. 3) had an 8-0 shutout. Epting (No. 4) won by a score of 8-1 and Filip (No. 6) had pulled out an 8-6 triumph. Maina-Itegi suffered a 9-8 (10-2) setback in the top singles slot, while Popovici was edged 8-6 at the fifth spot.

The Nittany Lions will host Hood College in the spring home opener on Sunday, March 26 at 1 p.m.
