Softball sweeps Wells in conference opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team returned to action with a doubleheader sweep of Wells College, 17-0 and 16-0, in the United East opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions, playing for the first time since March 9, improved to 5-4 on the season and are 2-0 in conference action.

In the opener, Briana Smith tossed the first no-hitter of her collegiate career and stuck out a personal-best 12 batters. The junior right-hander allowed just three baserunners (two walks and one hit batter), only one of which made it to second base.

Veronica Maryanski was 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Susan Duncan was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored. Arizona Shreck was 2-for-4 with a double, home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Emily Strupp, Briana Smith, Naomi Fay, and Hayden Perrone all tallied a pair of hits.

In game two, Shreck allowed one hit and struck out a career-high seven batters to earn the win in the pitcher's circle.

Shreck, Duncan, Strupp, and Erin Spatz all finished with three hits in the game, with Shreck and Duncan each scoring three runs and combing for five RBI.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNY Morrisville in an United East doubleheader on Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m.
