Softball wins two on Friday, heading to seventh straight NEAC Title game

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team defeated Keuka College, 12-1, and Penn College, 3-1, to make a return trip to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship game for the seventh year in a row.

The Nittany Lions (30-8) came out strong with five runs in the bottom of the first against Keuka in the opener. Berks then tacked on two runs in the second, before the Wolves (14-21) scratched out a run in the top of the fourth. Berks plated five runs in the fourth and recorded three quick outs in the top of the fifth to win the game due to the mercy rule.

Val Miller continued her excellence in the pitcher's circle, matching a career-high with six strikeouts. The senior left-hander scattered three hits and allowed just one run in 5.0 innings of work.

Brianna Smith was 3-for-3 with one home run, one RBI, and three runs scored, while Becca Faust finished 2-for-2 with four RBI and a run scored. Maddy Davidson, Heather Rissell, and Jess Rozick all collected two hits. Sophia Cinti and Cori Dickinson both had one hits and combined to score five runs.

In the second game, the Berks offense put up three runs in the bottom of the second. Berks was held silent the rest of the way and the Wildcats (23-14) made things interesting in the top of the seventh. The visitors got a leadoff double and two batters later got a one-out double to make it a 3-1 game. The next batter fouled out to catcher and Rozick got a strikeout, but the ball flew to the backstop and allowed the runner to reach first and extend the game. With runners on first and third, the next batter ripped a ball up the middle that Rozick was able to knock down and throw to first in time to end the game.

Davidson went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Smith was 2-for-3 with one run batted in. HUNTER HART was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Faust and Rissell each scored runs for Berks.

Rozick gave up just three hits and allowed one run, while striking out six batters in 7.0 innings of work.

Penn College and SUNY Cobleskill will face each other on Saturday at 11 .m. The winner of that game will face the Nittany Lions in the NEAC Championship at 1 p.m. If Berks wins that game, they will be crowned NEAC Champs, if the other team wins a final winner-take-all game will be played on Saturday afternoon.
