Softball drops a pair of heartbreakers as season comes to a close

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks softball team suffered a pair of heartbreaking setbacks at the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Berks fell by a score of 3-2 to No. 10 ranked Ithaca College to start the day and then fell 2-0 in an elimination game against Brandeis University later in the day.

The Nittany Lions close out the year with an overall record of 32-10 and have won a game at the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season.

In the opener, Ithaca scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to build an early 2-0 lead. Berks responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to even the game at 2-2. Brianna Smith doubled down the right field line to score Hunter Hart, who reached on an error earlier in the inning. Sophia Cinti followed with a grounder to shortstop, that Maddy Davidson was able to score on to tie the game at 2.

Ithaca retook the lead at 3-2 after a one-out RBI double by Annie Cooney and the Bombers were able to hold off Berks in the bottom of the seventh, despite a single by Hart.

Val Miller scattered six hits and allowed three runs, while striking out one batter in 6.1 innings of work. Jess Rozick struck out one batter in 0.2 innings of hitless relief.

Smith finished 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while Hart and Davidson were both 1-for-4 with a run scored.

In the second game, Berks was not able to generate much offense against Sydney Goldman. The Nittany Lions finished the game with three hits, singles by Hart, Smith, and Cori Dickinson.

Brandeis got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third, after a double, stolen base, and a ground out to shortstop. They added to their lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Miller and Rozick again turned in phenomenal efforts in the pitcher's circle. Miller gave up three hits and one run, while striking out three batters in 3.1 innings of work. Rozick allowed one run on two hits and struck out two batters in 2.2 innings.

Rozick, HEATHER RISSELL, and BECCA FAUST were four-year standout seniors, who have seen a great deal of success in their career. They also enjoyed sensational help from three-year senior Miller and two-year senior MACKIE CAFFREY. That group won three straight NEAC Championship titles and had a four-year record of 118-34-1 overall and went 71-1 in league play.

It will be impossible to replace the talent and effort that this group of seniors provided on and off the field, but head coach Donna Ference does have a strong core of players to build around moving forward.
