Softball splits at NEAC Tournament on Friday

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team opened up the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament with a 4-0 win over Penn College, before dropping a 3-2 heartbreaker to Keuka College later in the day on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (21-8-1) will face Wilson College in an elimination game on Saturday morning, with the winner facing Keuka in the championship in the afternoon.

Against Penn College, Berks pushed two runs across the plate in bottom of the first inning. Val Miller drew a one-out walk and Brianna Smith singled to center, which was mishandled to allow Miller to get to third. Cori Dickinson made the Wildcats pay by sending a fly to right field that was deep enough for Miller to tag up and score from third. Ashley Malek followed with a single down the left field line to score B Smith from third.

The Nittany Lions tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Miller had a one-out infield single and B Smith tripled to right field to make it 3-0. Dickinson then smashed a double to left center to score pinch runner Ashley Berry.

Jess Rozick picked up the win with five shutout innings, scattering two hits and striking out eight batters. Miller tossed the final two innings in relief, giving up two hits while holding Penn College scoreless.

In the second game, Berks put up a single run in the bottom of the first and second to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Miller reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single by Dickinson. In the second inning, Rozick drew a one-out single and moved up to second on a bunt single by Heather Rissell. Hunter Hart then laced a grounder through the right side of the field to score Rozick from second.

The Wolves (19-7) knotted the game at 2-all in the top of the third inning. With Katelyn Warren sending a sacrifice fly to left to scored Jessie Hammer and Janessa Vaadi adding an RBI double to score Brittany Vergason.

In the fourth, Keuka loaded up the bases and got the go-ahead run when a walk to Vergason brought in pinch runner Shelby Burgess from third. The Wolves were still threatening with bases loaded and just one out, but Miller come on in relief to get a fly out to left and then another to right to escape further damage.

Berks got a back-to-back one-out singles by Rissell and Hart in the bottom of the fourth, but pitcher Whitney Tyler worked out of the jam.

In the bottom of the seventh, Miller reached on an infield single and advanced a base when the second baseman's throw, which was already late, sailed wide of the bag. B Smith grounded out to the third baseman and Miller moved up to third base on the play. The next pitch by Tyler was smoked to right field by Dickinson, but the ball stayed up just long enough for the right fielder to make the catch.

The Nittany Lions will need to do things the hard way if they want to win their fifth NEAC title in six years. They will face Wilson at 11 a.m. on Saturday and would need to defeat the Wolves twice later in the day to claim the conference championship.
