Softball edged by No. 20 Ithaca in NCAA opener

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks softball dropped a hard fought battle, 3-0, to No. 20th-ranked Ithaca College in the opening round the NCAA Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon at Kostrinsky Field.

The Nittany Lions (28-8) were able to threaten with runners on base throughout the game, but were unable to find a timely hit to put runs on the board.

Pitcher Jessica Rozick gave a strong outing going against the nationally ranked Bombers (32-10) with six strong innings. The sophomore right-hander scattered six hits and allowed three runs (two earned) while picking up six strikeouts.

Ithaca got on the board in the bottom of the second with a leadoff double and manufactured a first run of the game with a groundout to shortstop that scored the runner from third. The Bombers tacked on an unearned run in the fourth off an infield single that the speedy runner was able to score all the way from second base on. The final run came off a solo home run to left by Hannah Anderson, who finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Offensively, Carley Smith led the Nittany Lions with a 2-for-3 effort, while Jenna Heffner was 1-for-4. Heffner reached base on an error by the pitcher to open the game and was moved up to second on a walk to Megan Olsen, but Berks couldn't capitalize with any runs. In the top of the third, Heffner had a one-out single and Chelsea Bright followed with a walk, but again Haley Congdon got out of the jam unscathed. Smith led off the fourth with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Becca Faust, but Smith was left stranded on second. Smith added an infield single in the sixth with two outs before Congdon got out of trouble.

In the top of the seventh, Kendel Reed was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Heather Rissell followed with a walk. Congdon was able to get a pair of fly outs and a groundout to secure the win for Ithaca.

Berks will face Susquehanna University, who lost 4-1 to Ramapo College earlier in the day, in an elimination game on Saturday, May 13 at 1:30 p.m.
