Rozick fires perfect game to clinch regular season title, Berks sweeps Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, PA - Jessica Rozick fired a perfect game and the Penn State Berks softball team exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to take game one from Wilson College, 9-0. With the victory, the Nittany Lions clinched the NEAC South Division Regular Season title and earned the right to host the conference tournament next weekend. Berks followed that up with a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind win in the second game to finish off the sweep of the Phoenix on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions conclude the regular season with a 21-game win streak to improve to 25-7 on the season and 19-1 in the NEAC, while the Phoenix drop to 24-12 overall and 15-5 in the conference.

In the opener, Rozick sat down all 18 batters that she faced in order. She struck out at least two batters in each of the first four innings and finished with nine total punchouts. Rozick tossed a perfect game earlier in the season in a win against the College of Saint Elizabeth. The sophomore right-hander improves to 14-3 in the circle with a 0.94 ERA and and 130 strikeouts in 104.2 innings pitched.

Berks got on the board with two runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Carley Smith and Heather Rissell. The way Rozick was pitching, that score would have been enough, but the Nittany Lions were able to put things far out of reach with a seven spot in the sixth. Jenna Heffner and Ashley Malek did the bulk of the damage with 2-RBI a piece in the inning, while Megan Olsen and added an RBI double.

Smith finished the first game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Heffner went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI, and a run scored. Malek, Rissell, and Becca Faust all collected two hits in the game.

In the second game, the Phoenix jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. But Berks was able to even up the score at 2-all when a ball off the bat of Olsen was mishandled and scored Heffner and Chelsea Bright in the top of the third. The score remained that way until the top of the seventh when Berks was able to scratch another run across the plate. Kendel Reed led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Rissell followed with an infield single, but Reed had to stay at second. Madison Newhouser then moved both the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Wilson elected to intentionally walk Heffner to load the bases, but Bright made them pay when she sent a fly deep enough to the outfield to score Reed with a sacrifice fly.

Val Miller turned in a complete-game effort to earn the win. The left-hander scattered eight hits and allowed two runs, while striking out two.

The Nittany Lions will earn a first-round bye in the NEAC Tournament, which will be held next Friday through Sunday at Hintz Athletic Field. More details about the tournament will come throughout the week.
