Softball season draws to an end at regionals

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (May 8, 2015) - The Penn State Berks softball team gave Moravian College everything it could handle, but fell in a heartbreaker 3-2 before suffering a 4-0 setback to the University of Rochester. It marked the third consecutive season the Nittany Lions made it to the NCAA Regional Tournament.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions trailed 3-0 after the Greyhounds first at-bat in the opening half of the first inning. Moravian seemed to be in cruise control until the Nittany Lions broke through with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Megan Olsen had a one-out single and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rhianna Roulston. Mackenzie Huber then followed with a single down the left field line. In the fifth, Jenna Heffner reached on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on an RBI single by Ashley Malek.

Casey Hafer turned in one of the finest performances of this season, if not her career as she went against a Greyhound squad that entered the day batting .329 with 25 home runs and 236 runs score. After the first inning hiccup, Hafer settled in and faced the minimum amount of batters in three of final five innings. In the top of the seventh, Moravian looked poised to add score a few more with runners on first and third with one out and the meat of the order coming up. But Hafer forced a pair of pop outs to shortstop to escape the jam.

In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Heffner fought off several pitches with a 1-2 count and eventually won the battle with a single up the middle. Heffner, representing the tying run, was stranded at first as the Moravian pitcher forced a comebacker.

In the season finale, the Nittany Lions could only muster up three hits against Brittany Grage, who is a two-time Liberty League Pitcher of the Year and most recently named the NFCA National Pitcher of the Week. Berks threatened in the top of third when Roulston drew a leadoff walk and Huber followed with  a single to leftfield. The runners were later moved up to third, but Grage worked out of the jam with a groundout.

Moscato hit a double in the top of the seventh and the Nittany Lions eventually had runners on first and second with two outs. But again, Grage shut the door, this time with a strikeout to secure her seventh shutout of the season

The Nittany Lions finished the season with a 19-14 overall record and went 15-5 in conference, en route to their third consecutive NEAC South Division Title. After going 3-0 in the conference tournament, Berks earned its third straight NEAC Championship title and third trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament.
