Softball downs Abington to advance to final day of NEAC Tournament

READING, PA (May 2, 2015) - The Penn State Berks softball team overcame an early deficit to defeat Penn State Abington, 12-4, and advance to the final day of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Softball Championship on Saturday at Hintz Athletic Field.

Abington jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The rally began with a solo home run to left center by Breanna Lineman and a pair of two-out RBI singles by the bottom of the batting order.

Berks responded very quickly in their half of the inning and eventually took a 4-3 lead. Ashley Malek and Julia Moscato each singled to start the inning and Megan Olsen drove in Malek with a deep double to right field. Rhianna Roulston was then hit to load the bases and a single by Mackenzie Huber drove in two runs. Roulsten later scored on a passed ball for the final tally of the inning.

In the very next inning, Berks put up another four spot to jump out to an 8-3 advantage. Roulston drove in two batters with a single and Olsen later scored on a wild pitch. Kaylie Vrabel drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to shallow left field that was caught by the shortstop, whose momentum took her out of position to make a play at the plate.

Berks took advantage of some Abington miscues in the bottom of the fourth to tack on another run. Jenna Heffner led off with a single and advanced to third on an throwing error by the shortstop on a grounder by Casey Hafer. Heffner then raced home to score on a wild pitch. They closed out the contest with three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Malek and Huber each recorded two hits, with Malek scoring two runs and Huber recording two RBI. Heffner, Moscato, Olsen, and Roulston each scored two times.

Hafer earned the win in the pitcher's circle, tossing 5.0 innings and striking out four batters.

The Nittany Lions will face the North No. 1 seed Keuka College on Sunday, May 3 at 10 a.m.
