Nittany Lions sweep St. Elizabeth in home opener

READING, PA (April 3, 2015) - The Penn State Berks softball team finally had the chance to play on its home field and they responded with a sweep over the College of Saint Elizabeth in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions, powered by Casey Hafer's strong pitching effort, picked up an 8-0 win in the opener. Rhianna Roulston recorded a three-run home run in the first inning en route to a 10-1 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Hafer scattered four hits over six scoreless innings of work. The senior right-hander struck out the side to open the game and finished with a season-high seven strikeouts. She helped herself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored.

The game was held scoreless in the early going before Berks finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Hafer led off with a double and was advancing to third on a fly out to center by Ashley Malek. The throw from the center fielder sailed wide of third and went out of play, which sent Hafer to home. The Nittany Lions (4-6, 3-1 NEAC) tacked on three runs in the fifth to build a comfortable 4-0 cushion. Jenna Heffner drove in two runs with a double and scored on a double by Hafer.

Roulston was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Heffner went 2-for-4 with two doubles and four runs batted in. Kaylie Vrabel added two hits, a run, and an RBI, while Megan Olsen had an RBI and two runs scored.

Olsen allowed just three hits in three scoreless innings of work in the second game. She struck out four batters and did not allow any baserunners beyond second base. Abby Staskiel finished off the final two innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out three.

Olsen had a two-out single in the bottom of the first that scored Chelsea Bright and Hafer. Roulston followed that up with a three-run shot to center field to bring the score to 5-0. Berks added four runs in the third that was capped off by a bases clearing triple by Heffner.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington in a pair of crucial NEAC South Division games beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 4.
