Softball swept on opening day

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 9, 2015) - The Penn State Berks softball team opened up its 2015 campaign with a pair of tough setbacks on Sunday afternoon at the FastPitch Dreams Spring Classic.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions fell 5-0 to NJAC powerhouse Rowan University and were later nipped, 3-2, by Gettysburg College.

Casey Hafer tossed a complete game with three strikeouts against the Profs, who reached the Super Regional of the NCAA Tournament last season. Hafer and the Nittany Lions were doomed by a pair of errors that led to two runs in the third inning. Berks also squandered a scoring opportunity in the first inning, with back-to-back singles by Jenna Heffner and Hafer. They had runners on second and third with just one out, but they were left stranded.

In the second game, the Nittany Lions went ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning when Chelsea Bright and Hefner scored after the shortstop could not handle a grounder by Ashley Malek. The lead held up until the top of the seventh when the Bullets scored two runs on an inside the park home run by Melissa Tighe. Megan Olsen pitched all seven innings, allowing nine hits and striking out one batter.

The Nittany Lions will continue their spring break trip with games against Lycoming College and Greensboro College on Monday, March 9.
