Lions win NEAC opener over Harrisburg

CHAMBERSBURG, PA (April 29, 2011) – The No. 3 seeded Penn State Berks softball team downed second seeded Penn State Harrisburg, 9-3, in the opening round of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship on Friday afternoon at Wilson College.

The Nittany Lions pounded out 11 hits – five went for extra bases – and took advantage of six walks to score their runs. The Lions took control with three runs in the fourth to go ahead 6-1 and tacked on three more in the top of the seventh to pull away completely.

Pitcher Larissa Tenley took advantage of the run support to pick up her ninth win this season. Tenley scattered six hits and allowed only one earned run. It was the 11 complete game of the season for the junior right hander.

Marissa Ruggiero had a two-out double and scored on a single by Brittany Hicks in the opening frame. With two outs in the third, Casey Hafer singled, Ruggiero and Hicks each walked to load the bases and Dayna Harrison added a two run single.

In the fourth inning, the Lions loaded the bases with a single by Alyssa Stahly, double by KATE HARLEY and a walk to Devon Denker. Harrisburg retired the next two batters and nearly escaped unharmed. But Ruggiero singled in a run and two scored from an error by the second baseman.

Harrison added an RBI triple in the seventh. Kluth tacked on the final two runs with a double.

The Nittany Lions will take on No. 1 Wilson College today at 4 p.m. The winner will play tomorrow at noon, the loser will play at 10 a.m. against the winner of the Penn State Harrisburg-Gallaudet game.
