READING, PA (April 2, 2011) - The Penn State Berks softball team scored early and often in its sweep of Penn State Abington in Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader at Hintz Athletic Field. Berks won both games by a score of 12-3.
Berks wore pink jerseys and socks to show support in the first annual "Strikeout Cancer" games. The Lions raised over $500 which will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
In addition to the scores being identical in both contests, the Nittany Lions (8-11, 5-3 NEAC South) also pounded out 13 hits and limited Abington to only three in each game. In both games, the Nittany Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning.
In the first game, Larissa Tenley picked up the win with five innings pitched, no earned runs allowed and seven strikeouts. She sat down Abington (2-14, 2-2 NEAC South) in order in the first, third and fifth innings. Tenley also added two hits, two RBI and one run scored.
Alyssa Stahly, who had a game winning walk-off single in the Lions win on Wednesday, continued her hot streak at the plate. Stahly crushed the first home run of her career to left center field in the fourth inning. The three-run shot capped off the Lions scoring in the first game.
Dayna Harrison was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Casey Hafer and Brittany Hicks each added two hits.
In the nightcap, Devon Denker struck out five batters over four innings. She allowed three runs, none earned, and scattered three singles. Hafer recorded a strikeout in a perfect fifth inning.
Shari Lynn Kluth, Marissa Ruggiero, Harrison, Hafer and Stahly each had two hits. The Lions began the eight-run third inning with five straight hits.
Berks will travel to Gallaudet University on Sunday for a NEAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
