Softball cruises to NEAC sweep over Abington

ABINGTON, PA (April 10, 2011) – The hot bats of the Penn State Berks softball team led to a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) sweep on the road against Penn State Abington on Sunday afternoon. Both games were halted in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule, with Berks winning 16-4 and 19-1.

The Nittany Lions (12-14, 10-6) combined for 38 hits, 31 RBI, nine walks and six extra base hits. The Lions had 13 players record two or more hits between the two games.  Ashley Barbiero went 4 for 4 with five RBI in the opening game, while Dayna Harrison finished the day 6 for 9 with six runs batted in and four runs scored.

Shari Lynn Kluth was 3 for 4 with a double and three runs scored in the first game. Brittany Hicks went 4 for 5 with four RBI and three runs scored in the second game and Casey Hafer added three hits and scored three runs. Alyssa Stahly, Larissa Tenley and Marissa Ruggiero each chipped in four hits.

Tenley earned the win in the first game with five innings pitched and four strikeouts. She scattered five hits and surrendered four earned runs. In game two, Hafer allowed one earned run and struck out two in five innings to pick up the win.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Swarthmore for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 12 starting at 3 p.m.
