Softball cruises to sweep in NEAC opener

READING, PA (March 26, 2011) - The Penn State Berks softball team poured on the runs to earn a doubleheader sweep over St. Elizabeth in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (5-8, 2-0 NEAC South) were the visiting team, despite playing before their home crowd at Hintz Athletic Field. Poor field conditions at St. Elizabeth forced the games to be played on the Berks campus.

Berks scored 17 runs in the top of the first inning and went on to win by a score of 32-2 in the opening game. The Screaming Eagles (0-2, 0-2 NEAC) held a 3-0 lead in the nightcap, but the Nittany Lions came storming back to win 17-3. In both games, every player in the Berks game finished with at least one hit.

Dayna Harrison combined to go 5-for-8 with 11 RBI and six runs scored in the two games. The freshman shortstop crushed a grand slam to left in the first inning and then a three-run shot in the second inning. The two homers, along with nine RBIs and five runs scored in the opening game all set single-game school records. Marissa Ruggiero and Casey Hafer each scored five runs to tie Harrison with the single-game feat.

Hafer and Larissa Tenley each had four hits in the first game, while Shari Lynn Kluth, Brittany Hicks and Ashley Barbiero each recorded three. Ruggiero had four RBI and four others drove in three a piece.

Tenley earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve her record to 3-3 on the season. She finished with 11 strikeouts, which is one shy of the single-game record she set last season against Penn State Abington.

In the second game, the Lions exploded for nine runs in the fourth to take the lead and finished things off with six more in the fifth inning. Ashley Heeman launched a three-run home run to left field, the first of her career. The junior third baseman finished with three hits, three runs scored and three RBI.

Hicks had a bases clearing triple and finished the game with four runs batted in. Alyssa Stahly went 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored, while Vicki Graver finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Kate Harley added two hits and drove in two runs.

Devon Denker hurled a complete game with four strikeouts and allowed only three runs – two earned. She also helped herself at the plate with two hits and two runs scored.

The Nittany Lions will host a NEAC doubleheader with Wilson College tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1 p.m.
